Well actually I can't provide much help on the subject of spiritual direction. But then again, I searched online and in truth, finding some connection to a form of spiritual direction was a bit more difficult than I had anticipated. So this blog's purpose is not to provide my insights but instead to ask a more basic question:
are you searching for a Catholic spiritual advisor or mentor?
If you are, just post a comment saying yes. I'm looking to organize a way for people who are struggling to connect with priests, nuns, monks, other religious and lay persons who can provide some kind of mentoring.
So often there are programs for direction for alcoholics, pregnant women, single mothers, battered people, the homeless, inmates and so forth. But what about the regular men and women of all ages who go about their regular lives, doing regular things and yet are in search of some kind of connection. Often the people I'm speaking to (or about) don't go to church often, or if they do they don't have deep roots (otherwise I don't suspect they'd have such a difficult time finding a mentor, but I could be totally wrong).
I know from my own experience with Catholicism, the journey is often like following an old country road that follows straight and easy for a time and then winds along a mountain or teeters out into bumpy gravel. When we're at the lows of faith, reaching out for help can seem more daunting than the idea of not receiving guidance. But still, when pushed to edge or perhaps when feeling that particular boost of spirituality at 2 am, we find ourselves typing "catholic spiritual advisor" into Google. But after many different searches, no real help can be found.
So for now, I want to see how many others would like to be connected with some kind of spiritual advisor/mentor/guide/teacher/whatever. I will look into organizing a nationwide list of mentors or places to contact. There are too many bright and talented people in this world who just need some guidance now and then from similarly bright individuals who've been gifted with another kind of grace from the Holy Spirit.
As always, I leave you a bit of musical selectional:
For the ears: La Vie en Rose by Edith Piaf. There's a new movie about her I'm dying to see.
